Opening Friday, January 14, THIS los angeles and Monster Children magazine host Fierce, a solo exhibition featuring original works by Australian graffiti and street artist Anthony Lister.
Fierce debuted this past December during Art Basel at a pop-up gallery space in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District. The exhibition will make a special one-night appearance in Los Angeles at THIS los angeles in Highland Park, and works on view include 11 wood panels, five large canvases and more than two-dozen masks.
Rendered in acrylic and spraypaint, the wood panels feature Lister’s iconic superheroes as well as rare self-portraits: In one painting, a messy-haired Lister stands with his arms crossed in front of a finished graffiti piece, and in another, he uses a roller to paint one of his giant street murals. The masks are painted on uniquely shaped wood cutouts and each feature a ferocious black cat with blood dripping from its fangs. Prices start at $400 for masks. The opening reception takes place on January 14, 7-10 p.m. at THIS los angeles, 5906 N. Figueroa St., Los Angeles, CA 90042. The reception is free and features a DJ and an open bar.
About Anthony Lister Anthony Lister’s tireless approach to living is an unrelenting approach to art. [...] I first became aware of Anthony Lister’s work last year while traveling around the US. I took the month off to go explore and see what there was to be seen. I spent a lot of time in New York photographing street art and there was one particular mural in Williamsburg that stood out. The more I looked at it, the more I liked it. Turns out I wasn’t the only one. In the time since, Lister has become one of the artists in the street community that has been getting a lot of traction, and rightfully so. Fresh perspective and a style that shows a great personal voice. He’s definitely an artist that I keep my eye on, and I always get excited when his work pops up in LA where I live. He’s even had work commissioned by The Standard hotels in Hollywood and New York, and had a wonderful solo show that I attended recently at THIS Los Angeles Gallery. [...]
